Welcome to Dosbarth Year 5 & 6

Below you will find various pieces of information which I hope will help you support your child (and myself) through his/her time in my class.

Weekly Spelling words– Every Monday pupils are given ‘spelling lists’ (differentiated to support individual children) to learn. They will be uploaded to their Hwb accounts and also put on to J2 Spell Blast. They will be encouraged to learn the words using this game at home/school.

TTRockstars

Multiplication tables are also given every Monday and in Year 5 and 6 they are expected to know all their tables by the end of the year. They will be encouraged to use TTRockstars as much as possible as it really helps them learn their tables at home/school.

Homework – Every Monday children will be given their spelling words on Hwb- they will have to write a sentence for their words by the Friday. If there is a problem with accessing Hwb they can use a breaktime to complete in class.

.Termly  Projects Each term pupils are set an individual project which they work on independently at home, with your support. Fuller details are given separately regarding the subject, format and deadline for handing in this piece of work.

Reading -Pupils  are able to read any book that interests them and will be given time during the school day to read independently. It is vital that they practice reading every night at home. All pupils will have the opportunity to read in small groups during the weekly ‘Guided Reading’ session.

Continuous Assessment – To ensure your child continues to make positive progress in his/her school work, levels and standards of work are assessed regularly and appropriate targets are set for individual pupils from day-to-day.  These are always carried out sensitively so that pupils are able to respond to these in a positive way, with no feelings of pressure. Staff are able to then support our pupils in the best ways possible according to their needs.

Withdrawal Groups -We are very fortunate at Ysgol Golwg Y Cwm to have effective systems of additional support available to pupils needing that ‘extra push’. Some pupils will attend group work and individual sessions with Miss Leahy and other members of staff  at set times during the week. These sessions are incorporated into our working school timetable.

School Timetable -Of course, pupils are taught by myself for the greatest part of the time. However, there are certain lessons where other members of staff will be teaching my class.

P.E . Kits etc– P.E. lessons – Wednesday – shorts, T-Shirt and trainers are essential.

Thank you for your continuous support during this school year and I hope your children will enjoy the opportunities and time they will share with me.

Books2Africa – 2021- Blwyddyn 5/6 sorted out the library and resource rooms in the school. They went on the website and found information about donating any books that we did not use within the school. The children had to box the books by weighing them (30kg) and labelling them for the courier to collect. They were proud when they received their certificate and regularly have updates about their donations. They are used in schools in Africa.

Homelessness – 2022- Crisp blankets- Pupils are working on a project with the Humanities Department in Maesydderwen to create crisp blankets for the homeless to keep warm. Throughout the year the children will collect crisp packets, clean them and fuse them together. At the end of the year they will be donated to organisations that will support the homeless.
