Weather in Wales
The children began forecasting the weather in Wales on a map in preparation to record a weather forecast in the future.

Love Spoons
For their Eisteddfod competition, some children in Dosbarth Melyn created love spoons!


February 2026
Welsh landscapes
Using their knowledge of Kyffin Williams, the children have begun outlining their chosen Welsh landscapes. Then, they used chalk or oil pastels to add colour to their work.


Macmillan
Wear green to support Macmillan Cancer Support.

Valentine’s Symmetry
The children used their understanding of symmetry to create heart cards for their loved ones to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Ramadan Scavenger Hunt
The children had questions about different religious celebrations around the world and so we took part in a scavenger hunt to find out more about Ramadan (which begins next week). The children showed great team work, problem solving and retrieval skills.

Dragons – Talk for Writing
The children have spent weeks working on developing their dragon descriptions and today, finally, they got to write them! Da iawn plant.

Swansea City Stadium
We were invited to spend the day in Swansea City Stadium with our friends from Premier League Stars. The children had a fantastic day touring the stadium, learning about AI and writing their own reports for their time with Courtney. Diolch!




Roll and draw
Based on Kyffin William’s artistic style, the children have begun exploring drawing landscapes and their components.

Six Nations Carousel
The children took part in a carousel with lots of maths activities focusing on the Six Nations, and Wales’ involvement.

World Map
For our topic, the children asked to find out more about the countries of the world. We used different maps of the continents to label the world map using our own key.

Micro:bit
The children explored using micro:bits to code different animals. They loved learning about this technology and are excited to do more with them in the future.
Santes Dwynwen
The children wrote their own recipes for Dwynwen’s potion – they were very imaginative in their creations!

Cricket
We had a fab time learning how to correctly use a cricket bat and practiced our batting skills!

Testing properties
For science, the children were testing different properties that materials have.

CAHMS
Thank you to Jo Marney from CAHMS for our 5 Ways to Deal with Worry session today – the children found it very helpful!

Football
We worked on our listening and reaction skills this week for football.

Sketching techniques
The children worked on their shading techniques today in preparation for their work on Kyffin Williams in a few weeks.

Cricket

Cooking Together
The children had a fantastic morning making pizzas with Jen Davies from Cooking Together Wales. Diolch Jen!

Holiday recount
To share what they have been up to during the Christmas half term, we have used our senses to write sentences and make paragraphs. It was so interesting to see what the children have been doing during their time off!

Class Parties
To celebrate the last couple of days in school, we had a Christmas themed class party. The children enjoyed some food, games and dancing!

Christmas Trip
For our Christmas trip, we went to Brynamman Cinema to watch Zootopia 2. The children thoroughly enjoyed and even had an ice cream!!

Santa!
The children were very excited to meet Santa today and receive a box of chocolates from him.

PE
The children worked on passing and dribbling today. They worked well in teams and showed great progress with these skills!

Letter to Santa
Today, the children planned and wrote a letter to Santa using the features of a formal letter. They were able to assess their own and other’s work – da iawn plant.

Protect Our Planet Day!
The children joined live lessons throughout the day which focused on protecting our planet. They enjoyed the space session and polar session the most!

Football
This week, the children worked on their communication skills including non-verbal queues they could use in games.

Experiment time!
The children had questions about their teeth and what damages them. To answer these, we have started an experiment in which we have placed eggs into different drinks to see which has the least / most influence. The children have written predictions and are excited to see the end results!

Diabetes Awareness Month
To mark this important occasion, children wore blue to show their support and raise awareness of diabetes.

Children in Need
Thank you to our wonderful children and parents for supporting Community Dreams for this year’s Children in Need!

PE
With Courtney, the children worked on their navigation skills and took part in games involving various movements like jumping, hopping etc.

Michael Rosen Day
The children took part in the live poetry reading with Michael Rosen and wrote their own silly food poems to celebrate the author!

Wreaths
The children worked together to create wreaths for our classroom to commemorate Remembrance Day.

Protect the egg!
Yesterday, the children worked in teams to design a way to protect an egg being thrown. Children had £100 to buy equipment and 3 out of 6 groups managed to not crack their egg!



Tracking costs
The children explored the importance of calculating costs with this activity where they planned their own parties and designed their own receipts with the items they bought.

Money Games
To kick off Money Week, the children tested their reading and memory skills with this money game involving receipts and calculating costs.

For their spreadsheets all about themselves, the children have been collecting their heights using cm.

Today, the children took part in a carousel focusing on space in the Welsh language. They were tasked with speaking, listening, reading and writing activities, as well as art and numeracy focuses.

World Mental Health Day!

Spelling games
Using their spelling words, the children played a fishing game where they had to read the word and say it in a sentence.

BBC NOW Sea Stories
The children enjoyed watching the online concert on BBC NOW this afternoon!

Planet fact hunt
The children used their reading skills to find interesting facts about one of the planets in our solar system. They created lovely mind maps of the information they found!

Football
The children took part in lots of games and even managed to play a quick game of football at the end!

All About Me
The children wrote lovely paragraphs to tell us all about themselves. They could identify and accurately use the features of paragraph writing to talk about their lives.

Football with the Swans
Diolch Courtney for starting our 12 week programme! The children will be taking part in football and general PE skills, and have a follow on Health and Well-Being lesson each week.

Science
Children were exploring invertebrates this week and their characteristics. They were able to sort animals into various invertebrate categories based on their understanding – da iawn plant!!

KiVa
The children shared their opinions on the yard and experienced their first KiVa lesson with Miss Jones.

Inner and outer self-portraits
The children designed inner and outer self-portraits of themselves to showcase their external and internal selves. Da iawn!

The children got to know each other with this game! They had to find children in class with different features and write their names on the sheet.

Prehistoric Pottery

Sri Lanka
Lots of work on Sri Lanka today! The children have written post cards, made Sinhala flashcards, created landscapes using their chosen mediums, created an online word search and completed coordinate questions. Gwaith bendigedig!

Lantern Making
The children designed and made their own lanterns today.

Games
We decided to play some games outside today for PE! It was lovely to be out in the sun.

Ramadan
Our children participating in Ramadan shared information about the event and answered questions that others had. It was great to see them confidently share their experiences which are so important to them and their families.

The children made their own pottery pieces today. They are so excited to paint them next week!

Prehistoric Pottery
Today, we started to learn about prehistoric pottery and comparing it to what we use today. The children looked closely at Bell Beaker pots and designed their own pots inspired by this style. They are looking forward to bringing their designs to life in a few weeks! 🏺✏️👏🏼

Valentine’s Day

The children have started creating presentations to showcase their understanding of how Valentine’s Day is celebrated throughout the world.

Differences lettering
Our topic this term is “differences” and the children made lovely lettering celebrating diversity for our display!



BAME
This afternoon, we learnt some important information about enslavement and the British Empire’s involvement. The children were shocked to learn about this history and created mind maps sharing what they had learnt.

Particles
As part of our Science topic, we looked at the particles in Solids, Liquids and Gases. The children worked together in groups to showcase how particles behave and interact in the three states of matter.

Children’s Mental Health Week
Today, we joined the Picture News Children’s Mental Health Week online lesson. We listened to the importance of looking after our minds and how to deal with big emotions.

Problem Solving
The children completed subtraction problem solving games today. It was great to see them applying their knowledge to fun tasks like this!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The children have used their understanding of the book and their imagination to design their own chocolate factories. Very imaginative work here!

Friendship Cards
The children have spent the morning making lovely, thoughtful friendship cards for Community Dreams Ystradgynlais.

Hockey Festival
The children in Year 4 attended a Hockey Festival in Maesydderwen hosted by Hockey Wales. They had a fantastic morning learning different hockey skills by playing various games. Diolch!

Swimming Diary
For PE this term, we will be going swimming. We are going to be keeping a swimming diary of our goals, achievements and what they do during each lesson.

A very busy day for us in Dosbarth 3/4! The children have completed lots of chocolate themed activities – they especially loved making their chocolate bars! They’ll be taking these home wrapped in their personally-made wrappers.

The children spent the morning writing letters to either Santa or their parents.

The children are designing their own chocolate bars based on our class novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They are very excited to make these in a few weeks!

Children in Need
Our very generous parents donated cakes for our class to enjoy this afternoon. It was a lovely afternoon to mark Children in Need.

Remembrance Day Assembly

Remembrance Day
We have made lovely Remembrance Day plaques which will be on display in school. They are absolutely fantastic – the children put a lot of effort and thought into them. Super proud of them all!


Adobe Express
Today, we attended an online lesson which introduced the children to Adobe Express. They were able to create posters using different media based on Remembrance Day. Bendigedig!

Hockey
For PE this term, we will be doing Hockey. Today, we started by learning how to hold the hockey stick and how to do a push pass.

Recycling sort
The children spent the afternoon sorting items into different recycling bins. We are thinking about how we can help the planet now and in the future! Da iawn plant.

October 2024
Oil spill clean up
There were mini oil spills today in class and the children worked together to try to clean up the water, animals and feathers. It wasn’t an easy task but they were able to work together and problem solve. We discussed the kinds of people that do these tasks in real life and what their jobs look like. Da iawn!

More independent learning this week! The children completed lots of activities around African animals including some art, poetry, and data work. Bendigedig!


Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae
We spent the day using lots of Welsh in the classroom and saying “Shwmae!” whenever we could. Da iawn plant.

Black History Month
The children joined in to a webinar on Black History Month hosted by Picture News. They were able to hear stories from women around the UK and understand their background. This event started some really important conversations!

Coordinates
Lots of independent work this afternoon! While small groups worked with me to plot coordinates on a world map, other children worked independently to develop their knowledge of our topic “Big Wide World”. Da iawn!

Self-portraits
During their first week in Dosbarth Melyn, the children created self-portraits using their inner and outer selves. We were very impressed with their art skills and learnt so much about each child!

Dodgeball
The children showed their competitive sides today in PE!

Circus Skills
The children absolutely loved practising their circus skills – they showed great resilience and enjoyed the challenge of trying something new!


Animal sunset artwork
After learning about Africa’s “Big Five”, the children created animal silhouette paintings using a mixture of paint and card. They were really pleased with how their artwork turned out!

Craig y Nos
As part of our topic, we visited Craig y Nos to take part in activities focused on rivers. The children enjoyed making observations, collecting data, and thinking about how they were going to use this information in the future. Thank you to Eleri who organised the day. Diolch!

FIT FORTNIGHT
For the next two weeks, the children will take part in a variety of activities including yoga, rounders, walking, football, rugby, clubbercise, jujitsu, and sports day!

Feet Bones
As we start our new topic, Beneath My Feet, the children were interested to find out what bones are actually in their feet. Here they are investigating and labelling the bones found in feet.

Eid Party
To celebrate Eid, we held a class party with food and music. We were spoilt by our parents who kindly donated food for us to enjoy throughout the day. The children had such a fun time and were able to try lots of new food. Diolch!

UEFA EURO 2025 qualifying game – Cymru v Kosovo
The children had a great time supporting the Welsh women’s team in their second Euro qualifying game. They were so proud of the 6-0 win!

Celf a Chreft Eisteddfod Ysgol
This year, the children in Dosbarth Melyn were asked to create a collage of something Welsh. It could have been a local place, a Welsh symbol, or anything to do with Wales. Here are all the fantastic entries we had. Bendigedig plant!

Symbols of Wales, Syria and the Philippines
Lots of independent work today in Dosbarth Melyn! The children were tasked with translating Welsh, Syrian and Filipino symbols from English to Welsh, creating a piece of art on a symbol from these countries, complete a Welsh word search – and more!


Gymnastics
For PE this term, the children were excited to start gymnastics. During the first session, they practiced different jumping and landing sequences.

Types of Rocks
The children became scientists this morning! They were looking at different rock samples to write about their properties and what makes them different or the same.

Games
For PE today, the children played some competitive games on the 3G pitch. As you can see, they thoroughly enjoyed!

Swimming
The children were very excited for their last swimming session. They have learnt so much over the last four weeks!

The children have worked very hard to create a Welsh fact file all about themselves using sentence patterns they had learnt in the autumn term.

Kyffin Williams Landscape Sketching
The children have been sketching Welsh landscapes inspired by Kyffin-Williams work. They will add pastel colours to their work later this week.

Year 3/4 had a very special visitor in school today…

Cinema Trip
For our Christmas trip, we went to the cinema to watch the new ‘Wonka’ film. The children thoroughly enjoyed both the film and the ice cream.

The children spent the day baking Christmas themed biscuits. They were able to follow a recipe and take some yummy treats home at the end of the day!

Our classroom elf, Frosty, has arrived! The children and I are very excited to see what he gets up to during his stay.

Dosbarth Melyn had lots of fun at the Jambori! Lots of Welsh singing and dancing.

Making Graphs on J2Data
The children created tally graphs last week when collecting data on their favourite fruits. They have used this data to create bar graphs on J2data and answer questions based on their graphs.

Remembrance Day
The children have been talking about Remembrance Day and have created some lovely paragraphs explaining the importance of the day.

Halloween Art
To end the term, the children have been creating some Halloween-themed art. They enjoyed using the paints to create a colourful background for their stencils.

Paragraph Writing
This term, Dosbarth Melyn have worked really hard on creating paragraphs using new and exciting vocabulary. Here, the children are using connectives to add detail to their writing. Da iawn plant!

Measuring Height
The children have measured their heights in order to collect data for our classroom spreadsheet. They worked hard to use the rulers to measure using centimetres.

Topic
For topic, we looked at the different types of teeth. The children were able to label the different teeth in the mouth and write about their functions. Gwaith bendigedig!

TTRockstars
The children are working so hard in TTRockstars at the moment! This week, they have focused on the 2, 5, and 10 times tables. Da iawn plant!

Movement Break
In the middle of a topic lesson, we had a quick movement break!

Jeni Jiraff
Our Welsh mascot, Jeni Jiraff, has started to spend time with the children on the weekends. I look forward to reading what they get up to together!

Problem Solving
For problem solving this week, the children were tasked with working out the shortest route from one point to the other using key vocabulary (anti-clockwise, clockwise, forward, etc). They worked really well and came up with lots of different ways to solve the problem.

Science
The children started their Science topic, Living Things, by discussing what the term “habitat” means and researching different plants and animals that can be found in various water-based habitats.

Litter Picking
We have been litter picking around the school. Wow! What a lot of litter we found!!!


Making Bread
We have been making bread and eating it – it was delicious!

World Book Day – We all dressed up as our favourite characters from our favourite books!

Dydd Dewi Sant
Mr Geraint Roberts came into school to tell us the story of St David . He brought lots of musical instruments with him, including a beautiful Welsh harp. We really enjoyed listening to the story, which was set to music, and learning some Welsh songs!

We have been working with the boys and girls in Dosbarth 5/6 using Lego Spike. We have been making Lego models move by creating codes on an iPad.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
January 2023
We were so lucky today – the guys from Techno Camps came to school to work with us. We learnt how to make a Lego robot move using coding, and we also learnt how to crack codes and reveal messages!


AUTUMN TERM 2022

We had a very special visitor in the classroom today, Santa! We also had a great time at our Christmas party with lots of lovely party food and pop to drink. Happy Christmas to everyone!

Goals galore! We have been practising our goal scoring skills today!

Golwg Y Cwm have been so luck to have Mr Peter Duncan coming into school to show us some circus skills. He came to every class, and we were able to practise with all the circus equipment in the hall.

The children were so excited to take part in the Welsh Jamboree in the Welfare Hall. We had so much fun singing and dancing with Siani Sionc and Mr Urdd!
